Provided images through the tubes are captured on a Hoffman Engineering 126A. The digital imaging process can cause slight color and brightness variations between images. White phosphor tubes appear white to the eye. Images may may not depict all cosmetic details in every lighting evironment. Every night vision device has some degree of peppering or small spots at or below .003" (the smallest countable size depicted on a data sheet).

Q: Why do some pictures look more blue vs. green? Is one better? Also, some appear to be brighter than others. 

A: Color differences are primarily caused by taking digital images of tubes and are not reflective of tube performance. Tube pictures are provided to show spots and cosmetic blemishes.  White phosphor tubes will appear white to the eye - not blue or green, though there can be very slight variation among tubes.

Q: Why do some tubes contain dark spots?

A: Spots are caused by the manufacturing process of night vision intensifier tubes. Spots aren't an indication of performance and exist in nearly every tube (though some tubes may exhibit larger spots than others). Military Spot spec tubes permit countable spots (those larger than .003") in zone 2 and zone 3 (the rings outside of the bullseye on a dart board), whereas aviation spot spec tubes only permit countable spots in zone 3 (outer periphery of the tube, furthest from center).

Spots

L3Harris Tubes ending with UM or UA (ex. 18UM vs. 24UA) have differing tolerances for dark spots.

  • UM (military) tubes permit spots greater than .003" (diameter) in Zone 2 and 3. Spots greater than .003" are not permitted in Zone 1.
  • UA (aviation) tubes limit spots greater than .003" to Zone 3 only. This is L3's strictest spot spec.
  • Dark spots less than or equal to .003" don't meet the threshold as a countable spot and are commonly referred to as "peppering".

Performance

L3Harris unfilmed tubes are available with various minimum performance levels (18, 20, 22, 24).

The higher the performance series number (i.e. 20 vs. 18), the higher the minimum performance.

This performance series is then combined with a spot spec to identify the tube. For example, the 18 performance series, with unlimited FOM ("U"), and Military ("M") spot spec would be 18UM.

Product Details :

Auto-shutoff flexibility: The DTNVS has a traditional on/off knob but also includes an auto-shutoff feature which engages when it senses that its been flipped up on a helmet, as well as independent pod auto-shutoff when each pod is rotated up.

Independent pod shutoff allows the user to rotate a single pod out of their line of sight (above their eye) which can be helpful when looking through a thermal scope. It may also be helpful if the user wants to use a single monocular (which also saves power). Additionally, by rotating both pods out of the way (as opposed to flipping the device onto the helmet), the user can quickly collapse both pods for fast use without needing to flip the goggle down from the helmet. This creates additional flexibility for moving in and out of tight spaces like vehicles, where the user might otherwise accidentally strike their goggles on a door frame or other object when flipped up.

The auto-shutoff feature is optional can be disabled if the user has a need or preference for "always on" or can't risk an accidental shutoff (fast-roping, climbing a ladder, etc.) 

Battery Life: The DTNVS uses a single CR123a battery which provides over 25 hours of run time - about 2x that of similar binocular night vision devices that use a AA battery. While some BNVD's with a AA battery include a battery port for an optional battery pack, the DTNVS does not, as its better on-board battery life didn't necessitate taking up additional space on the goggle for a connection port. 

Servicing / Maintenance Flexibility: Compared to proprietary or factory built BNVDs like the PVS-31A, the DTNVS uses PVS-14 style optics. As a result, the DTNVS includes an adjustable diopter to closely tailor the focus to the user's eyes (helpful for those that require corrective lenses). Additionally, it provides more flexibility for servicing the device (ex. replacing a scratched or damaged lens) or upgrading the lenses to a lightweight alternative. Inter-pupillary distance stops may be purchased separately and are easily installed (though the majority of users opt to use the device as-is, without them).

Streamlined approach: The DTNVS uses mx10160 format tubes which have automatic gain (brightness) that have become popular in binos like the RNVG and are used in a variety of other goggles such as the GPNVG, PVS-23, ANVIS 9, and others. Controls are simple and familiar: one knob for OFF->ON->IR.
